ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Today the Calvin women's soccer team saw its season come to an end when the Knights fell to Washington University 4-1 in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16. 

Making their 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament the Knights came into today's match ranked 17th nationally while the Bears were ranked 2nd nationally. 

WashU came out swinging as the Bears scored three minutes into the half to take the quick 1-0 lead. As play carried on the Knights got their first good chance on goal in the 18th minute when they were awarded a corner. A bending ball was sent in and found the head of Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian) who directed the ball towards the net. Unfortunately, the Bears goalkeeper managed to tip it over the crossbar at the last second and WashU remained in control of the lead.

As halftime approached Calvin went on the attack with the ball at the feet of junior Lindsey Houtsma (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian). As she entered the eighteen yard box two WashU defenders quickly closed in. Feeling the pressure, Houtsma sent the ball to her left to a wide open Katherine Bergman (North Farmington, Mich./Farmington) who calmly put the ball past the keeper and made it a 1-1 game heading into halftime.

When the second half whistle blew the Bears once again struck fast as they scored just 39 seconds in to once again take the lead. WashU added to their lead in the 70th minute and once again in the 78th minute to go on to win 4-1.

Calvin recorded four shots during the matchup while junior goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) recorded three saves.

The Knights ended their 2023 season with a 16-1-4 record. It marked Calvin's first appearance in the NCAA III Tournament Round of 16 since 2015.
