GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Calvin University women's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season in a 76-48 loss at DePauw on Friday in the opening game of the DePauw Women's Basketball Invitational.
Calvin (2-1) trailed 14-12 at the end of the first quarter and took a 19-16 lead early in the second quarter after a basket from
Emma Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), but DePauw (1-1) answered with a 14-2 run to take the lead and held a 36-26 advantage heading into halftime.
Witte led Calvin with nine points at the break, while
Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) added five points.
The third quarter belonged to the Tigers, who out-scored the Knights 29-10 as they continued to build on their lead. DePauw shot 64.7 percent from the field and made the Knights pay for four turnovers in the quarter by turning them into nine points on the other end before closing the game out in the fourth period.
The Tigers dominated the game in the paint, out-scoring the Knights 44-18 while also turning 17 Calvin turnovers into 24 points. DePauw also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds that turned into 16 second-chance points.
Witte was the lone Calvin player in double figures with 15 points on 6-10 shooting from the field. Sall led the Knights' bench group with seven points.

NEXT UP: Calvin women's basketball will return to action at the DePauw Women's Basketball Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, November 18) when it plays at 4:00 PM against either Millikin or Otterbein.
