Eight Calvin Men's Soccer Players Receive MIAA Honors; Akintade Named MVP

Eight players from the Calvin University men's soccer team received All-MIAA recognition from the conference on Wednesday.
 
Senior midfielder Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) was named All-MIAA First Team and MIAA Most Valuable Player by the conference.
 
Zach Flowerday, Colin Iverson, Aguma Muhumuza, Chris Schau, Alex White and Daniel Wunder were also named All-MIAA First Team. Evan Nieuwenhuis was named All-MIAA Second Team.
 
White also took home MIAA Rookie of the Year honors.
 
Oliver Akintade
 
Akintade (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) won MIAA Most Valuable Player on top of his fourth consecutive All-MIAA First Team honor. The senior midfielder finished the regular season tied for first on the Knights with 30 total points thanks to 11 goals and eight assists in 17 games. In conference play, Akintade scored six goals and added six helpers to help lead the Knights to their 17th consecutive MIAA regular season championship.
 
Akintade's MIAA recognition is added to a long list of accolades during his career, which include All-America honors in 2021 and 2022.
 
Akintade is the 22nd Calvin men's soccer player to be named MIAA Most Valuable Player, and the 11th player to win the under Calvin head coach Ryan Souders.
 
Zach Flowerday
 
Flowerday (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) earned his first All-MIAA honor as a senior in 2023. Flowerday played in 16 of the Knights' 17 games, scoring three goals and adding four assists from his position in the midfield to tie for fifth on the team with 10 total points.
 
Colin Iverson
 
Iverson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) earned his second straight All-MIAA First Team honor from his position as one of the Knights' center backs. A threat on both ends of the pitch, Iverson helped a defense that recorded eight shutouts this season while also adding five goals (three of which came in the Knights' regular season finale against The University of Olivet on October 24).
 
Aguma Muhumuza
 
Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) earned All-MIAA First Team honors for the fifth consecutive season from his position in the center of the Knights' defense. Along with helping Iverson in the middle of the Knights' back line of defense, Muhumuza contributed three goals and three assists offensively while starting all 17 games this season.
 
Chris Schau

Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was named All-MIAA First Team for the third straight season after leading Calvin with 12 goals in only 13 games this season. After battling through injuries in non-conference play, the 2022 MIAA Most Valuable Player scored seven goals in seven MIAA contests and tie Akintade for the team lead with 30 points.
 
Alex White
 
White (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) was named All-MIAA First Team and MIAA Rookie of the Year in his first season as a transfer from Knox College. White led the Knights and the MIAA with 10 assists to go with six goals on the season from his midfield position, and his 22 points for the season ranked third on the team.
 
White is the seventh Calvin player to win MIAA Rookie of the Year honors, joining teammates Akintade (spring of 2021) and Jacob Ryu (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) last season as previous honorees. 
 
Daniel Wunder
 
Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) joins Muhumuza as a five-time All-MIAA First Team honoree. The fifth-year senior keeper started 16 games of the Knights and finished with a 0.83 goals against average (GAA) and .815 save percentage for the season with six shutouts. In seven MIAA contests, Wunder recorded three shutouts (and combined for one more) with a 0.50 GAA and .850 save percentage. He also stopped a pair of critical penalty kick opportunities late in close games against both Hope and Kalamazoo to help the Knights win both games.
 
Evan Nieuwenhuis
 
Nieuwenhuis (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) earned his first All-MIAA recognition as a senior in 2023. played in 14 games and chipped in two goals while also playing a critical role on the defensive end of the pitch in both the midfield and on defense.
 
Calvin finished the 2023 regular season 14-2-1 overall and 7-0-0 in MIAA play, and enters this week's MIAA Tournament as the top seed. The Knights are ranked 12th in the most recent United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll, and ranked number-one in Region VIII in the NCAA's most recent rankings.
