Calvin Men's Soccer Topples Trine in Conference Opener

ANGOLA, Ind. – The No. 17 Calvin men's soccer team opened its 2023 MIAA campaign in winning fashion, defeating Trine University 4-1 on the road Tuesday afternoon.

The Knights dominated play in the first half and led 1-0 at the break on a first half goal by senior Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Schau's goal, his sixth of the year, came in the 29th minute. Freshman Foster Garrett (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) ignited the play by winning a ball just before the endline and sending a cross into the box Schau slammed home.

Calvin finished the first half with a 7-1 shots at goal advantage.

The Knights averted an early second half Trine scoring threat as a shot in close sailed over the bar. Calvin took a 2-0 lead moments later as junior Alex White (Lake Bluff, Il./Lake Forest Academy) sent a free kick into the box that senior Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) was able to win in the air and head into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Calvin used a set piece to take a 3-0 lead in the 64th minute. The set piece ball was knocked down by Muhumuza and slammed home by senior Nick Augustyn (Westmont, Il./Benet Academy). The goal was the first of Augustyn's Calvin career.

Less then a minute later, Calvin was awarded a penalty kick on a Trine foul in the box in the 65th minute. Senior Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) made no mistake on the spot kick, slipping a shot past the keeper for his fifth goal of the 2023 campaign.

Trine was awarded a penalty kick in the 72nd minute and also converted to close out the scoring.

Calvin finished the game with a 16-7 shots at goal advantage. Senior goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the distance to pick up the win as he collected one save.

COACHES COMMENT: "That was a great win on the road," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Trine has played as difficult of a schedule as anyone and has a lot of talent. To get 3 points in the MIAA from the start is big, and to do in on a particularly warm day was fantastic. A really good team win."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host rival Hope at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
