ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin University women's volleyball team put together a strong performance in its return to MIAA play with a 3-0 sweep of Adrian by the scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-13 on Tuesday.
Calvin (19-4, 5-1) started strong in the opening set as
Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and
Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) each recorded four kills and
Avery Ekkens (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) served the final six points to give the Knights a 1-0 lead in the match.
Adrian (11-10, 4-2) trailed 20-15 in the second set before rallying to cut its deficit to 20-19 late, but Baker was too much on the attack with seven kills in the set and helped push the Knights to a 25-22 set-two win.
The third set was more of the same, as Baker added five more kills and
Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) added three blocks to help Calvin finish off the sweep.
The Knights were strong on the attack throughout the match, hitting .368 overall. Baker led all players with 16 kills, setting a new career high for a three-set match, while Kellogg hit .556 with 10 kills without an error. Ekkens finished the match with nine kills and an attack efficiency of .500.
Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led the back row effort, setting a new season high for a three-set match with 19 digs.
Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, Mich./Wyoming) led the front row defense with six blocks.
COACH'S COMMENT: "We came out with a lot of energy and intensity," Calvin head coach Dr.
Amber Warners said. "We played well together as a team. I thought our defense and blocking were very active tonight, which really helped our offense capitalize on getting kills."
