ALBION, Mich. - Tonight the Calvin women's soccer team traveled to Albion to take on the Brits in its final game of the regular season. Going into tonight the Knights had a 13-0-2 overall record and had already clinched the first place spot in the MIAA tournament. The Brits came into the match with a 4-1-10 overall record and a 1-0-6 MIAA record.Â
Albion struck first when a Brit attacker sent a rocket past goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) in the 17th minute to take a quick 1-0 lead.Â
Throughout the rest of the half Calvin outshot the Brits 8-5 with 6 of the shots being on goal. Unfortunately, the offense couldn't get things to go their way and the Knights went into halftime trailing 1-0.
The Knights started the second half with vengeance as Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) gathered the ball just outside the eighteen yard box in the 48th minute. She turned to face the goal and slipped a through ball to Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) who skillfully sent a shot past the diving keeper to tie things up and 1-1. However, less than a minute later Albion answered with a goal of its own to reclaim the lead.
In the 77th minute the Knights once again found themselves on the attack as Maggie Smith (Flint, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic) got possession deep in Albion territory. After beating a Brit defender she sent an arching cross into the box to Lindsey Houtsma (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) on the back post who headed the ball into the back of the net to make the game 2-2.
With the clock winding down Albion had one last trick up its sleeve as the Britons scored the final goal of the game in the 85th minute to make the final score 3-2. This was the Knights' first loss of the season.
During the match Dodge recorded two saves and Calvin outshot Albion 23-9.
