Calvin Women's Volleyball Takes Down Comets in Three

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The eighth-ranked Calvin University women's volleyball team continued it's strong run in conference play with a 3-0 defeat of The University of Olivet by the scores of 25-9, 25-15 and 25-14 on Wednesday.

Calvin (16-3, 4-1 MIAA) rolled through the first set as the Comets recorded just one kill while the Knights hit .520 on the attack to record a 25-9 opening set win. Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) finished with a perfect six kills in six attempts.

The second set was more of the same, as Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) led the Knights with four kills while Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, Mich./Wyoming) added three blocks to push the Knights to a 2-0 overall lead.

The Knights finished off Olivet (11-11, 2-2 MIAA), with Baker and Ekblaw leading the attack with three kills apiece, and Tryna Vander Zwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) adding two aces to go with two assists to finish off the sweep.

Martinez led all players with six blocks (including two solo blocks). Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) and Avery Ekkens (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) each finished with nine digs.

COACH'S COMMENT: "I thought we came in and played pretty steady the whole night," Calvin head coach Dr. Amber Warners said. "I was really happy that we stayed focused and intense, but also stayed loose. We didn't let our mistakes affect us, which is something we have really been working on."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball returns to action this weekend when it hosts the 2023 Midwest Invitational. The Knights will play Susquehanna (3:00 PM) and UC Santa Cruz (7:00 PM) on Friday night, followed by a match against Millikin (1:00 PM) on Saturday.
