Calvin Men's Soccer Sparks to Life in Comeback win Over Hardin-Simmons

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the second consecutive night, Calvin used a come-from-behind effort to claim victory at Zuidema Field.

Trailing 2-0 against the visiting Hardin-Simmons Cowboys, Calvin scored five unanswered goals to post a 5-2 win Saturday night at Zuidema Field.

The match completed a 2-0-0 weekend for the Knights after a 4-3 Friday night win over #12 University of Redlands.

Saturday's match began at 7 p.m. but was halted by inclement weather seven minutes into the match. The match was picked up nearly an hour-and-a-half later with the match still 0-0 with nearly 38 minutes still to play in the first half.

Hardin-Simmons came out of the lengthy delay with energy and fired in a goal in the 19th minute of play. A turnover in Calvin's defensive third four minutes later led to a second Cowboy goal, forcing the Knights to stare into a 2-0 deficit.

A batch of late first half substitutions gave the Knights renewed energy and with 17 seconds left in the half, freshman Hans Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fired in a shot from the six-yard box after freshman T.J. McVey (Aurora, Il./Benet Academy) won a battle for the ball in the corner and whipped a cross into the box that Pruis connected on.

The goal by Pruis – the first of his collegiate career – gave the Knights a new lifeline.

Just eight minutes into the second half, a Hardin-Simmons player was whistled for a second yellow card, leading to a red card and dismissal from the match.

With a man advantage, Calvin pressed the attack and tied the score 2-2 in the 61st minute on another Pruis goal, this time on a cross from freshman Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS).

One minute later, the Knights took their first lead as senior Christopher Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) slipped a perfect through-ball pass that sprung junior Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./) free on a breakaway. On the break, Akintade was able to beat the keeper with a low shot inside the far post to give Calvin a 3-2 advantage.

In the 70th minute, senior Mason Smith (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) powered in a shot from the six-yard box on a cross from junior Josh Williams (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS). Freshman Jacob Ryu (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) closed out the scoring, heading in a corner kick from Athan Ladas (Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills HS) in the 84th minute. The goal was also the first of Ryu's collegiate career.

Senior goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) moved to 2-0-0 on the year for the Knights.

Calvin held a 12-5 shots at goal advantage.

COACHES COMMENT: "Give Hardin-Simmons credit, they took it to us in every facet for nearly the entire first half," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "That's a really good team and I'm sure they will make some noise in their conference and region this year. To our credit, we hung around and that goal right before the half was a big momentum booster. It got our guys believing a little more and they carried that into the second half. We've got several challenging opponents on our schedule this year and tonight was one of them. Now it's time to regroup and prepare for a challenging week of games next week."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Aurora next Tuesday and will follow with a two-day weekend tournament at Ohio Wesleyan.
