Calvin Women's Soccer Clips Comets in Conference Opener

OLIVET, Mich. – Calvin opened its 2022 MIAA campaign with a 2-0 shutout victory at Olivet College Wednesday afternoon.
The victory bumps the No. 13 Knights to 9-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.

Calvin grabbed the early lead with a goal by junior Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) as she took a lead pass from sophomore teammate Lindsey Houtsma (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and buried a shot for her fourth goal of the season.

Playing a defensive-minded Olivet squad, Calvin came up with an important insurance goal in the 50th minute as Houtsma was able to redirect a shot into the Olivet net off a double-assist from freshman Tatum Goodling (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day School) and junior Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian HS).

Calvin continued to fire shots on goal throughout the second half, forcing the Olivet defense into making a team save off the back line while goalkeeper Jordan Hartman came up with several saves for the Comets as well.

Calvin finished with a 25-4 shots at goal advantage. Hartman had eight saves for Olivet while Calvin sophomore goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie HS) came up with a pair of saves in goal for the Knights with Dodge collecting her ninth shutout victory of the season.

COACHES COMMENT: "Pleased to get the win today," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Olivet put a lot of people behind the ball and I credit our group for finding a way to get a goal early in both halves to get the result."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Alma on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in front of a Calvin Homecoming Crowd. As part of the evening, the Knights will honor the members of their 2006 national quarterfinalist team that finished 20-0-1.
