Women's Soccer Rolls to 6-0 Homecoming Win

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin women's soccer team was in control from start to finish of a 6-0 win over Alma in front of a Homecoming crowd Saturday night.

The Knights scored four times in the first 30 minutes of the contest, starting with a goal by Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./Lakeland Christian Academy) off assists from Tatum Goodling (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) and Lindsey Houtsma (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

Houtsma would get into the act later in the half, adding two goals to push the Calvin advantage to 3-0. Houtsma's first tally came in the 22nd minute off a pass from Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian), while her second goal came unassisted in the 27th minute.

Minutes later, Sophie Mueller (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) closed the first-half scoring for the Knights with her team-leading fifth of the season off another Houtsma assist in the 30th minute.

The second half would be more of the same for the Knights, as Goodling scored her fourth of the season off a cross from Mueller into the box, and Grace Weaver (Mishawaka, Ind./Marian) finished the scoring with well-struck goal from well outside the box over the keeper's head in the 78th minute. The goal was Weaver's first collegiate score.

The offense controlled possession throughout the night, helping Kalex Dodge (Jackson, Mich./Leslie) record the shutout without having to make a save. Dodge and the Knights have now recorded 10 consecutive shutouts to open the season.

The Knights finished the game with a 27-3 advantage in total shots, and a 9-0 edge in shots on goal.

Calvin improved to 10-0-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in MIAA play with the win. Alma fell to 2-3-2 overall and 1-1-0 in league play in defeat.

COACH'S COMMENT: "A great result for our team tonight on Homecoming," Calvin women's soccer head coach Emily Ottenhoff said. "We found goals from a lot of different people and competed hard for 90 minutes. It was a great Homecoming crowd and we are so thankful for the support."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's soccer returns to action on Tuesday, October 4, when it hosts Saint Mary's in a game scheduled to start at 7 PM.
