HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin volleyball team swept both matches on Saturday at the MIAA/NCAC Challenge hosted by Hope.
The Knights won the opener 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-11) against Denison, and followed that with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-21) win over Ohio Wesleyan in the afternoon match.
Calvin jumped in front of Denison early and never looked back, getting better as the match went on until it held the Big Red to only 11 points in the third and final set.
Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian) led the Knights on the attack with 13 kills while hitting .367 for that match, and also added 12 digs.
Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) added nine kills, while
Alyssa DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) added 29 assists and eight digs.
In the second match, the Knights held off Ohio Wesleyan to finish the day with a pair of sweeps.
Calvin hit .327 on the attack as a team, including a stellar .375 in the opening game to set the tone for the match.
Westra once again led the charge with 16 kills while also leading the team with 12 digs.
Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) added 11 kills, while Kellogg and
Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, Mich./Wyoming) each finished with three blocks.
The two wins improved Calvin's record to 5-1 on the season.
NEXT UP: Calvin volleyball will return to action on Friday, September 16, when it plays in a two-day tournament at Hope College. Friday's opponents will be Northwestern-St. Paul (5:30 PM) and Otterbein (7:30 PM).
