Calvin men's soccer alum Niko Giantsopoulos is set to make his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut.
A native of Markham, Ontario, Giantsopoulos is set to play for the Vancouver Whitecaps tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m. (EST) against Charlotte F.C. in a match that will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
Giantsopoulos is joining the Vancouver Whitecaps on a short-term emergency weekend loan from his current club York United of the Canadian Premier League.
He is the first Calvin alum to be called up to a Major League Soccer club.
The weekend call-up for Giantsopolous by the Vancouver Whitecaps was necessitated by injuries and illness to the goalkeeping group of the Whitecaps.
At Calvin, Giantsopoulos was a two-year starter in goal for the Knights, earning NCAA Division III All-America honors in 2014. He helped Calvin reach the NCAA III Tournament in back-to-back years including a trip to the NCAA III Final Four in 2015.
He has continued on to a professional soccer career, playing for three clubs in Australia before moving to the Canadian Premier League initially with Cavalry FC before recently moving to York United.
After his short-term loan is completed with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Monday, he is set to rejoin York United in time for the club's match against Pacific FC.
