GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team celebrated Calvin Senior Day with a 246-36 dual meet victory over Alma College Saturday afternoon at the Venema Aquatic Center.
The Knights finish their 2021-22 dual meet season with an overall record of 8-3.
Prior to the meet, Calvin highlighted five seniors – Bryce Miner, Julian Iturbe, Dat Cao (Vung Tau City, Viet Nam/Mount Saint Mary Catholic), Noah Holstege and Trevor Sparks – who were competing for the final time in the Venema Aquatic Center.
In the pool, Calvin took first place in 16 events with Calvin's divers leading the way.
In the one-meter diving competition, junior Jay Cen (Deerfield, Il./Deerfield HS) and sophomore Jordan Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) both recorded NCAA III Regional Qualifying cuts with Cen taking first with an 11-dive total of 465.23 points while Bergsma was second with (11 dive total) 450.0 points.
Bergsma then won the three-meter competition with an NCAA III Regional Qualifying cut (11 dive total) score of 474.74 points.
Calvin opened the meet with the senior led 400 medley relay team of Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS), Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant School), Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Emil Friedman School) and Miner (Sunnyvale, Ca./Homestead HS) taking first place in a time of 3:33.29.
Iturbe won the 50 freestyle (20.94) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.24).
Freshman Joshua Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) won the 500 freestyle (4:53.76) and 100 freestyle (49.13).
In the 100 backstroke, junior Caleb Terschak (Wildwood, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) and junior Josiah Vis (Crestwood, Il./Lockport HS) tied for first place with times of 54.61.
Vis then won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:00.38.
The 1000 freestyle went to junior Samuel Hoover (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm HS) in a time of 10:25.46 while freshman Anthony Crudele (Aurora, Il./Home School) took the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:01.03.
Freshman Jack Kulaga (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove South HS) took the 200 freestyle win in 1:48.27 while sophomore Austin Martinson (Aurora, Il./Metea Valley) won the 200 butterfly in 2:00.19.
Sophomore Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the 100 butterfly (52.36) while sophomore Forrest Peterson (Cross Plains, Wisc./Middleton HS) claimed the win in the 200 IM (2:01.69).
Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of junior Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Kulaga, freshman Ethan Wayne (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) and Hoover concluded the meet with a winning time of 3:15.93.
Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Championships scheduled for February 16-19 at the Holland Aquatic Center.
