WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Calvin men's basketball team was unable to hold off the Fighting Scots from College of Wooster in a 66-64 defeat on the final day of the Steve Moore Sunshine Classic on Tuesday afternoon.
Calvin (8-2) led for much of the game early, and then closed the first half with a 7-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer at the buzzer from
Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) to take a 40-26 lead into the break.
Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) was everywhere on the both ends of the court in the opening half and led all players with 15 points, while
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) added 11 points.
The second half would be a different story, as Wooster (7-2) scored the first 11 points and held the Knights to just one field goal for the opening six minutes to cut its deficit to two at 44-42.Â
Wooster took a 58-57 lead with 4:45 to play in regulation and held that lead into the final minute. With the Knights trailing 65-61, Egekeze hit a three-pointer from the wing with 21 seconds remaining to cut the Wooster lead to one. Calvin had two chances to tie or take the lead in the final 10 seconds, but could not get either shot to fall as the Scots held on for the win.
The Knights shot 44.4 percent from the field in the half, but struggled with 11 turnovers and shot 6-12 from the free throw line. Wooster took advantage of those Calvin miscues, out-scoring the Knights 15-3 in the second half in points off turnovers.
Egekeze led all players with 21 points to go with five steals and eight rebounds. He was also named the Defensive Most Valuable Player of the tournament after the game.
Overway added 16 points and six rebounds, while Bult joined them in double figures with 11 points.
NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball will be off for the Christmas holiday before returning to action with a game at Elmhurst on December 30. That game is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 PM.
