GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The Knights are MIAA tournament champions after beating Trine 1-0 after battling through wind and rain at Zuidema Field.
The first half consisted of both teams knocking the ball back-and-forth, exchanging shots on goal. Calvin had many chances of set pieces, an area of the game that has been a strength for them this season, but was unable to convert on any. The best chance of the half came from Trine when a hard shot that was sent towards the top left side of the goal. However, sophomore goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich/Leslie) wasn't giving up a goal that easily as she dove, fully extended, and smothered the opportunity.
In the second half things continued to be quiet until the 64th minute. Junior Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich/North Muskegon) gathered the ball on the left flank and carried it towards the top of the box. She then cut by her defender and sent a laser into the top left corner of the net giving the Knights a 1-0 lead. For the rest of the game the Knights bunkered defensively in and stomped out anything Trine threw at them.
Calvin outshot Trine 19-12 and Dodge recorded 8 saves over the course of the match. Today marked the 7th time Calvin has won the MIAA Tournament Championship.
