Calvin Men's Swimming and Diving Takes Day One Lead at Calvin Quad Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming and diving team built a first-place team score of 591 points on day one of the Calvin Quad Invitational. The four-team invitational also includes schools from Albion, Carthage and Ohio Northern.

Friday night featured the first of three sessions with a Saturday morning and Saturday evening session also scheduled on the books.

Calvin opened the meet by winning the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:23.03. The Calvin relay team of senior Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), senior Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), junior Vladimir Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS) and junior Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Wisc./Middleton HS) posted a time that is the fastest in Division III this season.

In the 500 freestyle, Calvin went 2-3-4 with senior Samuel Hoover (Beverly Hills, Mich./Fraser HS) taking second (4:56.05), sophomore David Bajwa (Potomac, Md./The Heights School), placing third (4:56.87) and sophomore Joshua Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) taking fourth (4:57.04).

Freshman Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS) had a stellar race in the 200 IM, winning in a time of 1:56.52.

Calvin went 1-2-4 in the 50 freestyle in blazing fashion. Holstege won the race in a time of 20.78 that ranks as the top time in Division III this season. Junior Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Heeres tied for third with times of 20.91 that ranks third on the national list. Peterson was right behind in fourth place with a top-10 national time of 20.95.

Calvin went 3-4-5 on the one-meter diving board. Sophomore Jason Perez (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell HS) was third (415.95), senior Jay Cen (Deerfield, Il./Deerfield HS) fourth (402.85) and sophomore Wilson Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) fifth (367.35).

In the 400 medley relay, Calvin's team of Hays, freshman Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School), Peterson and Heeres took first place with a time of 3:26.03 that ranks fourth nationally.

Saturday's competition begins with session No. 2 at 10 a.m. inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
