GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin University men's basketball team rolled to a 91-61 win over Hiram College on Tuesday at Van Noord Arena.

Hiram (3-3) got off to a strong start and led for the first five minutes of the first half, but Calvin (5-0) took the lead on an Owen Varnado (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) lay-up with 13:39 to play in the half and never looked back.

Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) was unstoppable in the first half as he punished the undersized Terriers with 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Knights to a 46-32 lead at halftime.

Hiram went to a zone defense in the second half in an attempt to neutralize Overway down low, and the Knights responded with good ball movement and strong outside shooting. Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) found soft spots in the Terriers' defense and used them to find open shooters, setting up three-pointers for Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) and Logan Van Essen (Crown Pointe, Ind./Illiana Christian) early in the second half as the Knights pushed their lead to 66-38 en route to the 30-point win.

Overway finished with a game-high 21 points and 16 rebounds to go with four assists, giving him at least 20 points in all five games and four double-doubles to start to his career.

Egekeze scored all 14 of his points in the second half, while Varnado and Matt Ambrose (Kildeer, Ill/Adlai E. Stevenson) each scored 11 points off the bench.

Bult led all players with nine assists to go with nine points. The Knights finished the game with assists on 23 of 34 made field goals, helping them shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 39.1 percent (9-22) from beyond the three-point arc.

COACH'S COMMENT: It was nice to get a lot of guys some minutes," Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall said. "We really wanted to do that tonight. It was great to see Matt Ambrose come back from injury with the confidence to make some shots. Jalen (Overway) had a huge first half, and Uchenna (Egekeze) had a really good second half. Overall, it's good to win and still have things you can work on."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball returns to Van Noord Arena on Friday, November 25, when it hosts Rockford University in a game scheduled to tip off at 7:30 PM.
