GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin men's basketball team completed its opening-week sweep with a 76-63 over UW-Stout Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena.
Calvin (3-0) and UW-Stout (1-2) were each playing the second day of a back-to-back, with the Knights looking to back up its upset win over UW-Oshkosh on Friday with another tough non-conference win.
The Blue Devils came out of the gates strong and held a 27-17 lead with 7:28 to play in the first half, but Calvin closed the half on a 19-7 run, capped by a three-pointer from
Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) in the final seconds to give the Knights a 36-34 edge heading into the half.
Calvin found their legs in the second half, led by first-year center
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian). Overway scored 15 of his game-high 24 points in the second half and also added six rebounds and a pair of assists.
Logan Van Essen (Crown Pointe, Ind./Illiana Christian) also had a big second half, scoring nine points after the break to help the Knights pull away and secure the win.
Calvin shot 57.1 percent in the second half and 48.3 percent for the game, while the Knight' defense held the Blue Devils to 36.2 percent shooting for the game and only 5-13 from three-point range.
Overway led all players with 24 points and added nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
Eli Sensenig (Grayslake, Ill./Westlake Christian Academy) added 13 points, while Van Essen and
Owen Varnado (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) each scored 11 points.Â
COACH'S COMMENT: It was a grinder," Calvin men's basketball coach
Bill Sall said. "I told our guys that was kind of reminiscent of an MIAA game at the end of February. Every is trying to find their legs and get it going. We made some really silly freshman mistakes, but they all played really hard. It was nice to see Jalen (Overway) down the stretch. This was kind of the first game he had a double team, and he reacted to it and made some great passes out of some great plays."
NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball goes on the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, November 16, when it travels to Illinois Tech for a game scheduled to tip off at 7:30 PM.
