Calvin Beats Olivet in the Final Game of the Regular Season

GRAND RAPIDS- The Calvin men's soccer team closed out its regular season tonight in a 3-1 win against the Comets on the campus of Olivet College.

The game started rather quietly as both teams traded possession and chances at goal were scarce. However, Calvin struck first in the 21st minute when junior Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Ill/Lake Forest) battled down the left flank before cutting into the box and sneaking a hard stuck ball under the Olivet keeper's outstretched arms.

In the second half junior Josh Williams (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) won a header and sent it into the box for Kadin Shaban (Jenison, Mich/Unity Christian) to collect and chip over the charging keeper. Eight minutes later Shaban's corner bounced of several people before finding sophomore Jacob Goodling (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day School) on the back post for the Knights' final goal.

Olivet was able to net a goal of its own in the 79th minute but it was not enough as Calvin went on to win 3-1. The Knights outshot the Comets 19-10 and Calvin goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded three saves on the night. Sophomore goalie Kaelen Matascatillo also saw 19 minutes of time in goal and made one save.

Calvin finished the regular season 14-2-2 overall and 6-1-0 in MIAA play. Olivet fell to 4-8-4 and 1-3-3 in MIAA play.

COACHES COMMENT: "Always good to get three points on the road," said Calvin head coach Ryan Sounders. "Olivet is a much improved and well-coached side, so we are certainly pleased to get a result there. Excited to rest up a bit and prep for the league tournament."

UP NEXT: Calvin will be the top seed in the MIAA tournament and will receive a bye in the first round. The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday, November 1st when they will host a semifinal game against the winner of a first round game between Albion and Kalamazoo.
