Explosive First Half Leads Calvin Women's Soccer to Victory Over Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich- Calvin women's soccer continued its season of dominance as the Knights cruised past the Kalamazoo Hornets in a rainy 4-1 win at Mackenzie Field.

This victory moved the Knights' record to 14-0-1 and not only allowed them to clinch a share of the league title but also clinched the top seed for the MIAA tournament.

As the top seed, Calvin will receive a first round bye to the league tournament and will host an MIAA Tournament semifinal match on November 2 at Zuidema Field.

In its win at Kalamazoo, the action started quickly as senior Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./ Lakeland Christian Academy) scored off an assist from freshman Lucy Inverson (Naperville, Ill./ Naperville North) in the tenth minute. Seven minutes later Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich/ Lansing Christian) found junior Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./ Toronto District Christian) who sent a rocket into the upper left corner for the second goal of the game. With ten minutes left in the half junior Maggie Smith (Flint, Mich/ Powers Catholic HS) added a goal of her own giving the Knights a commanding 3-0 lead going into the half.

In the second half junior Sophie Muller (North Muskegon, Mich/ North Muskegon) was able to collect a loose ball at the top of the eighteen-yard box and bury it to give the Knights a 4-0 lead. Minutes later the Knights gave up their first goal of the season as Kalamazoo was able to sneak one past goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./ Leslie HS) bringing the final score to 4-1.

Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 21-8 with Dodge recording one save on the night.

The MIAA regular season title is Calvin's third straight including the 14th in program history.

COACHES COMMENT: "Huge to get a win tonight on the road at Kalamazoo," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "It's always a tough place to play. I thought we came out focused and ready to compete. Looking forward to a break to rest up and prepare for a tough Albion team next week."

UP NEXT: Calvin will host Albion on Wednesday, Oct. 26th at 7 p.m. to conclude the regular season play.
