GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A late second half goal from senior
Emma Thompson propelled the Calvin women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Trine University at Zuidema Field Saturday evening.
The victory keeps the 11
th-ranked Knights on top of the MIAA table at 5-0-1 (16 points) with two regular season league matches left on the schedule. The Knights are four points ahead of second place Albion heading into a road match at Kalamazoo next Tuesday night.
The goal by Thompson (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) came with 13:54 left in regulation and came appropriately on Calvin Senior Night.
Thompson's goal came on a counter-attack with junior
Maggie Smith (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) springing Thompson free with a pass through the right win. With the goalie racing out of the box, Thompson slid a hard shot from just outside the top of the box on the run that clanged inside the far post for a 1-0 Calvin lead.
Both teams had scoring chances in the match but Calvin's offensive pressure in the final 25 minutes of the match ultimately won out in a contest that featured fierce competition for every possession of the ball.
Trine's best scoring chance came in the opening minutes of the second half as freshman Abby Robison launched a shot from the right wing that Calvin goalkeeper
Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie HS) deflected with the ball skimming off the far post an out of danger.
Calvin slowly began to build possession throughout the second half and began to pepper the Trine goal with pressure. After coming close to poking in a loose ball off a corner kick in the 74
th minute, Calvin finally broke through in the 77
th minute on the Thompson goal against the run of play.
The Knights then held firm possession of the ball over the final 13 minutes of play, holding the Thunder without a shot at goal down the stretch.
Calvin (13-0-1 overall) outshot Trine (8-4-2) 22-7 including 12-3 in the second half.
Dodge had one save for Calvin in posting her 14
th shutout of the season, matching a Calvin single-season record. Sophie Aschemeier had five saves in goal for Trine.
COACHES COMMENT: "Coming in we knew this would be a really tough game with both teams vying for the top spot in the MIAA," said Calvin head women's soccer coach
Emily Ottenhoff. "Trine is a really good team, receiving (national poll) votes. Credit our group through. I thought they dug their heels in and kept pushing to get a goal. In a good match like this, it's a matter of finding out who is going to bend and who is going to break and we found a way to get a huge result."
KNIGHT NOTES: At the conclusion of the game, Calvin honored the six members of its senior class. The seniors honored included Thompson,
Karley Michmerhuizen (Grandville, Mich./Unity Christian HS),
Lauren Hendricks (Madison, Wisc./Middleton HS),
Abby Strong (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg HS),
Abby Lyon (Holt, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) and
