CHICAGO, Il. – Calvin split a pair of dual matches on Saturday at the University of Chicago. Ranked 24th in Division III, Calvin fell to 7th-ranked Chicago 218-75 but also defeated DePauw University 160-120.
The Knights are now 6-5 in dual meet competition.
Calvin opened the meet by taking second in the 200 medley relay as its team of junior Claire Sytsma (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman Haley Thier (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep), sophomore Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) and freshman Sydney Sonday (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second in a time of 1:48.93.
In the 1000 freestyle, freshman Megan Pankratz (Palatine, Il./William Fremd) took third in a time of 11:40.14.
Thier was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:28.94) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.53).
Farrell placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:57.61) while senior Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was fifth (1:59.70). Edewaard added a sixth place swim in the 100 freestyle (54.87).
Sytsma was fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:01.21) while Sydney Sonday was fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.90).
In the 200 butterfly, senior Grace Ann Delcompare (Naples, Fla./Home School) was second (2:14.29) while sophomore Lynda Steen (Schaumburg, Il./Schaumburg HS) was fourth (2:16.92). Delcompare was fourth in the 200 IM (2:17.89).
Calvin concluded the meet in the 400 freestyle relay with its team of Edewaard, Farrell, Sydney Sonday and junior Hannah Brown (Palmyra, Va./Home School) was second in 3:37.79.
Calvin will now prepare to celebrate its senior class next Saturday when it hosts Alma at 1 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center.
