CHICAGO, Il. – Calvin split a pair of dual meets on Saturday at the University of Chicago. The 14th-ranked Knights were defeated by fifth-ranked Chicago 221-79 but Calvin defeated DePauw University 219-75.
The Knights are now 7-3 in dual meet competition this year.
Calvin's lone first place performance came in the 100 butterfly as sophomore Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Mn./Middleton HS) led a 1-4-5 finish by winning the race in a time of 50.65. Junior Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth (51.10) and sophomore Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fifth (51.11).
Camy added a fourth place swim in the 200 butterfly (1:58.10).
Sophomore Jordan Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a career-best score of 300.90 points in placing second on the one-meter diving board.
Calvin went 3-4-5 on the three-meter board as junior Jay Cen (Deerfield, Il./Deerfield HS) was third (230.40), Bergsma fourth (215.62) and freshman Wilson Goodpaster (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fifth (184.5).
Freshman Joshua Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) took second in the 1000 freestyle with a career-best time of 10:02.45 while freshman David Bajwa (Potomac, Md./The Heights School) was fourth in 10:22.28. Seidelman also placed second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:53.15.
Junior William Toomey (Runnels, Ia./Southeast Polk HS) was fourth in the 100 backstroke (53.27).
Senior Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Veneuzela/Emil Friedman School) was second in the 200 freestyle (1:41.33) and also in the 100 freestyle (46.03). Junior teammate Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) placed third in the 100 freestyle (46.13).
In the 50 freestyle, senior Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant School) was second (21.30) with Peterson third (21.34).
Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of Iturbe, Peterson, Holstege and Heeres took second with a time of 3:04.85.
Calvin will now prepare to celebrate its senior class next Saturday when it hosts Alma at 1 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center.
