Calvin Men's Soccer Battles Battling Bishops to 3-3 Double-Overtime Draw

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a matchup of nationally-ranked rivals, Calvin battled Ohio Wesleyan to a 3-3 double overtime tie.

Calvin (2-0-1) entered Saturday night's contest ranked third while Ohio Wesleyan (1-0-1) came in ranked 13th.

The match lived up to its billing as the two sides exchanged leads and combined for five second half goals before settling for an eventual draw - just the second between the two teams and the first since 2014.

The Battling Bishops carried play through the opening 10 minutes but the Knights began to press back as the first half wore on.

Calvin broke through for the first goal in the 33rd minute of play. Senior Mason Smith (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) curled a corner into the box that was deflected once and then headed on goal by senior Luca Seazzu (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque HS). The header by Seazzu was saved with an acrobatic stab by Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Mason Taylor but the rebound came right to the feet of senior Sam Twigg (Auckland, New Zealand) who made no mistake in blasting home the rebound for his fourth goal of the season with Seazzu drawing the assist on the play.

The Knights carried a 1-0 lead into intermission but Ohio Wesleyan struck back in the opening moments of the second half. In the 49th minute, Ohio Wesleyan All-American midfielder Hector Gomez, whirled to the center and launched a left-footed blast from distance that found the top shelf of the net to level the score.

Calvin regained the lead in the 60th minute as junior Ethan Harvey (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) launched a cross from the right wing that deflected off a defender and into the goalmouth with Smith running underneath the deflection and toe-poking a shot into the net for a 2-1 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan retaliated with back-to-back goals. The first came from Hector Gomez who received a quick pass from brother Cristian Gomez that bounced off the wet turf for a clean break on goal. Hector Gomez slotted home the shot for the equalizer just over a minute after Smith had given Calvin the lead.

The Battling Bishops took a 3-2 advantage in the 67th minute as Brady West broke free on a quick through-ball pass and slotted home a shot of his own.

The Knights were up to the task in fighting back just two minutes later as Smith scored his second goal of the game as he received a pass near the top of the box from junior Seamus Kilgallon and calmy deposited a left-footed shot into the corner to tie the match 3-3. Kilgallon (Pleasant Plains, Il./Wheaton Academy) picked up the assist on the play.

Fatigue began to play a factor as the game progressed although both teams sent shots just wide of the post in overtime before the contest ended in a tie.

Calvin finished the game with an 18-12 shots at goal advantage. Taylor had eight saves in goal for Ohio Wesleyan while junior Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had one save in goal for the Knights.

COACHES COMMENT: "Objectively, that's an absolutely phenomenal college soccer game," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "There were great moments from both teams and an incredible atmosphere. Honestly, it felt very like a postseason matchup. I thought we fought really well, and created some really excellent stuff. I think we can clean up some things moving forward, but there are definitely a lot of positives to take from the night."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Finlandia University Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
