Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team earned its first home victory this season with a 2-1 win over Ohio Northern at Zuidema Field.
The Knights were gaining a lot of control in the early portions of the match which led to some good opportunities. Senior Mason Smith (Flint, MI / Flint Powers Catholic) had a great chance as he cut through the middle and just placed it over the top of the net. Ohio Northern began to counter later in the first half as it was able to get some chances.
The Polar Bears broke through with a great shot on net, but goalie Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) made an incredible one-hand save to make the stop. As the first half neared an end, the Knights had a corner with about thirty seconds left. The cross came went to the far side and was put back in the middle by Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian).
Junior Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, LA / The Dunham School) headed towards the goal where it was deflected multiple times before Alex Bowser (Canton, MI / Plymouth) put it away, and gave Calvin a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
At the start of the second half, neither team was controlling the ball early on, but Ohio Northern started to pick up the pace. The Polar Bears finally got on the board with a goal in the 65th minute of the game to tie it up 1-1.
The Knights came right back in the 70th minute. Junior Seamus Kilgallon (Plainfield, IL / Wheaton Academy) was fouled inside the box allowing for Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, IL / Lake Forest) to score the penalty kick giving the Knights a 2-1 lead.
Calvin's defense stayed strong the rest of the game as it held Ohio Northern scoreless the last twenty minutes game to win the match 2-1. The Knights outshot the Polar Bears 14-10 on the evening won the corner kicks 6-5.
COACHES COMMENTS: "Really good to get a win at home," said head coach Ryan Souders. "That's a really good ONU team. Coach Matejka had his squad ready and made it very difficult for us. But our guys found a way. Happy to get the three points. And now a quick turn around against the Bishops. We'll work to rest up as fast as we can and prepare another battle."
