Box Score ALMA, Mich. – The fourth-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team pushes its win streak to 14 matches with a 3-0 sweep over Alma on Wednesday evening.
The first set of the match was a close contest early on after a kill by Grace Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy) gave the Knights an 11-8. Alma hung around with Calvin in the first set, but Calvin began to pull away as the set progressed.
The score was 21-10 after the Knights went on a 6-1 run that was capped off by three service aces by Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hils, IL / Timothy Christian). Calvin held onto the lead the reminder of the set to win 25-12.
The Knights used their momentum from the first set to jump out to a 12-6 lead after a service ace by Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy). The Scots were struggling to get their offense going in the second set.
The Knights took control and held to the lead the rest of the set. Senior Madelyn Hall (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had the final kill of the set to take it 25-15 and go up 2-0 on Alma in the match.
In the third set again, the Knights gained a nice lead of 11-6 after a kill by freshman Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, MI / Wyoming). Alma had no answers for Calvin as the Knights continued to hold a sizable lead. Calvin closed out the third set on a 14-8 run which was finished off with another kill by Hall. The Knights won the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
Westra finished the evening with 13 kills on 20 attack attempts to go with four aces and five digs. Sophomore Gabriella Kellogg had 9 kills. Junior Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, MI / Jenison) led the Knights in digs with 14 on the evening. Senior setter Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) had 38 assists and a pair of aces.
COACHES COMMENT: "We got the result we wanted on the road in the middle of the week," said Calvin head women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "We are excited to get back to practice tomorrow and continue to improve."
UP NEXT: The Knight will host rival Hope in a non-conference matchup on Saturday October 2 at 3 p.m.
