Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team opened conference play with a win by taking down Olivet 2-0 at Zuidema Field on Tuesday night.
In the first minute of play, Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, MI / North Muskegon) had a breakaway opportunity, but Olivet's keeper Jordan Hartman made a great save for the Comets. The Knights were in control in the early minutes as they had many chances. Elizabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) almost hit a long shot outside the box that just hit the top cross bar and went over the net.
Senior Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, MI / Plymouth Christian) just about put the Knights on the board with 28 minutes left in the half, but Hartman made the diving save to keep it 0-0. The Comets were struggling to get any possessions on Calvin's side of the field, and the Knights were taking advantage. Mueller again put the ball on net in the upper corner, and again Hartman made the save.
Calvin had plenty of chances to take the lead in the first half but couldn't capitalize as we went into halftime tied 0-0. The Knights outshot the Comets 26-2 in the half and Calvin had 11 corners as well.
Williams started off the second half with a long shot, but the keeper just got her fingers on it for another save on the night. The Knights maintained lots of possession on the Comets' side of the field and finally broke through for the first goal of the game. Mueller scored off a beautifully placed corner kick by Williams to give Calvin a 1-0 lead with about 36 minutes left in the game.
Calvin was in control most of the game, but Olivet had an opportunity to score. Senior Sarah Hoekwater (Hudsonville, MI / Unity Christian) made a nice save to hold back the Comets. The Knights added another goal with Mueller scoring her second of the game to make it a 2-0 game with eight minutes left. Olivet couldn't put any in the net and the Knights held on to win 2-0 in their first conference matchup.
The Knights outshot the Comets 42-5 on the evening, and Calvin had 16 corners to Olivet's one.
