Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin women's soccer defeated Anderson Saturday afternoon with a score of 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
The early minutes of the match had the Knights getting great opportunities right away. Eilzabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) had a shot that just went outside the net, and couple minutes later Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, IN / Lakeland Christian Academy) just missed with a shot outside the box. Calvin was cutting through the defense while Anderson wasn't making any noise on the offense.
The Knights finally broke through in the 16th minute with senior Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, MI / Plymouth Christian) scoring of the assist from Reimink to take a 1-0 lead. Calvin continued to put the pressure on as sophomore Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont. / Toronto District Christian) just missed the goal and hit the top bar. The Knights added to their lead as Talia List (Plymouth, MI / Salem) scored off a great assist from Kayla Beebe (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) to make a 2-0 game.
The Ravens came right back at Calvin and scored 30 seconds after their goal to cut the deficit to 2-1. The last ten minutes of the half saw little action as the game went to halftime with a score of 2-1. Calvin outshot Anderson 23-1 on the half and had 8 corners as well.
Calvin started the second half with a goal in the 48th minutes as Van Laare scored with the assist going to Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, MI / North Muskegon). The Knights weren't stopping the attack as they were able to get a penalty kick after a handball. Mueller took the penalty kick, but Anderson's goalie Emmalee Paalberg made the save.
Mueller redeemed herself after the penalty kick by scoring a goal on a breakaway to give the Knights a 4-1 lead. Calvin continued to add to its lead as Paulson scored her second of the game on another penalty kick to make it a 5-1 lead with 18 minutes left in the game. Calvin cruised the rest of the way to improve to 6-2-0 on the season.
