No. 7 Calvin Men's Soccer Clips Cornerstone 5-1 in Battle of the Beltline

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 7 Calvin men's soccer team extend its winning streak to four games after taking down Beltline rival Cornerstone on the road with a score of 5-1 Wednesday evening.

The Knights (7-1-2) were on the attack early as they were putting the pressure on the Golden Eagles. As the Knights continued to keep the pressure on, they broke through in the 12th minute. Junior Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) scored on a cross into the box from Coleman Ulry (Charlotte, NC / Covenant Day) to put the Knights up 1-0.

Cornerstone struggled to gain possession on the offensive end as Calvin's defense was holding strong against its attacks. Right before halftime in the 43rd minute, the Knights added to their lead. Freshman Ethan Brown (Norton Shores, MI / Muskegon Mona Shores) scored after a great pass into the box by Zach Flowerday (Holland, MI / Holland Christian) to put Calvin up 2-0 at halftime.

In the beginning of the second half, neither team made significant ground. After nearly twenty minutes of play in the half, the Golden Eagles finally were able score to make a 2-1 game. The Knights responded less than ten minutes with two goals within three minutes of each other.

Senior Mason Smith scored his fourth goal for the season thanks a pass from Sam Twigg (Auckland, New Zealand / N/A) to lead 3-1. Sophomore Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, IL Lake Forest) scored his sixth goal of the season unassisted to put Calvin up 4-1.

Cornerstone had no answers for Calvin's offensive, and Calvin broke through again in the 84th minute. Brown collected his second goal of the match with a cross from Jon Szydlowski (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg).

Calvin finished the match with a 22-10 shots at goal advantage. Senior Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the first 45 minutes in goal and collected one save. Freshman Kaelen Matascatillo (New Kensington, Pa./Minnesota Virtual Academy) went the final 45 minutes in nets and also had one save.

COACHES COMMENTS: "Always good to get a wing against another team from Grand Rapids," said Head Coach Ryan Souders. "Thanks to the parts of Knight Nation that trekked north to support. Hoping that we can heal up a bit with a little extra rest as we prepare for a really good Chicago team."

UP NEXT: The Knights will travel to play No. 9 Chicago on Wednesday, September 29 at 6 p.m.
