Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin women's volleyball continue in its winning ways by defeating Olivet in league play with a 3-0 sweep on Tuesday night in Van Noord Arena. The set scores were 25-8, 25-8 and 25-10.
The Knights came ready to go by taking a quick 8-1 lead after a hard kill by Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hils, IL / Timothy Christian). Calvin continued to extend its lead after a kill by Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian HS) brought the score to 17-4. Olivet couldn't stop Calvin's attack and struggled to create its own offense. The Knights dominated the remainder of the set to win 25-8, capped off by a service ace by Westra
Calvin used the momentum it had in the first set to jump out to an early 10-4 lead after a kill by Gabriella Kellogg. The Knights kept building on their lead and after a nice service ace by Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, MI / Vicksburg), they led 17-7 midway through the second set. The Comets again struggled to generate an offensive attack and the Knights defense was strong.
The Knights quickly grabbed the 13-6 lead in the third set, showing no signs of slowing down after a service ace by Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, MI / Jenison). Calvin controlled the rest of the set while Olivet was unable to find answers for Calvin's attacks. The Knights went on to take the third set and the match with a 3-0 sweep.
Westra led the fifth-ranked Knights with 10 kills on the evening followed by Smith with 9 kills. Schriemer finished the game with 28 assists while teammate Wrubel finished with 8 digs. The Knights finished with an overall kill percentage of .500 and improve to 13-1 on the season.
COACHES COMMENT: "It's always good to open the conference schedule with a victory," said Calvin head women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "Our goal is to continue to improve and get better one point at a time. We have challenging matches ahead this weekend so our focus will be on improvement in practice over the next two days."
UP NEXT: The Knights are back in action on Friday, where they will play Aurora University at 5:30 p.m. (EST) and Illinois Wesleyan at 8 p.m. (EST) in a tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan.
