Calvin Women's Soccer Wins at Wheaton

Box Score

WHEATON, Il. – Calvin picked up a 2-0 non-conference victory at Wheaton Tuesday evening.

The victory was Calvin's first against Wheaton since 2010 and its first at Wheaton since 1997. It snapped a six-game losing skid for the Knights against their long-time non-conference rivals as they improved to 5-2-0 on the season.

Calvin received second half goals from sophomores Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) and Elizabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) to pull away for the win while a staunch Calvin defensive effort allowed the Knights to post their third shutout victory of the season.

Calvin dominated possession in the first half, outshooting the host Thunder 12-2 over the opening 45 minutes of play.

The Knights continued to press the attack in the second half, firing six shots at goal in the opening 15 minutes.

Calvin's seventh shot of the second half proved to be the ticket as senior Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) raced up the left wing, slid a low cross through the box that eluded two defenders and found the foot of Mueller who banged in her eighth goal of the season. The Mueller goal gave Calvin a 1-0 advantage with just over 29 minutes left in regulation.

Wheaton (2-4-1 ) nearly leveled the score with a shot that hit the Calvin crossbar in the 63nd minute but the Knights were able to move the ball up the field shortly after and find the clinching goal as Williams rammed home a shot off a feed from Mueller. The goal was the seventh of the year for Williams.

Calvin held firm from there to secure the win.

Senior Sarah Hoekwater (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) had a strong evening in goal for the Knights, collecting three saves to post the shutout victory.

COACHES COMMENT: "A good win for our group tonight," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Wheaton is a tough team and a tough place to play. I was pleased with our energy from the start and thought we were very focused. It was a whole team effort tonight."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Anderson University on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Zuidema Field in a non-conference game.
