Calvin Closes Out Hope Tournament With Unbeaten Record After Saturday Victories

HOLLAND, Mich. - The No. 6 Calvin women's volleyball team added two more wins Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Muskingum and a 3-1 victory over Cornell College at the Hope Tournament.

The first match of the day saw the Knights going against Muskingum. Calvin jumped out to a huge lead in the first set as the score was 16-3 after a kill by Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hils, IL / Timothy Christian). The Fighting Muskies had no answers for the Knights in the first set. Calvin ended the first set on a 9-5 run which was capped off by a kill by Madelyn Hall (Hudsonville, MI / Hudsonville) to take the set 25-8. 

Set two began with another great run from the Knights as they took a 13-6 lead after a kill by Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian). Muskingum couldn't stop the offense that Calvin was bringing and struggled in the second set. Calvin began to add to its lead throughout the set and finished off the second set with a kill by Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, MI / Vicksburg) to take the set 25-13. 

Calvin had a 2-0 lead heading to the third set and lot of momentum, but Muskingum came into the set with a lot of fight. The Knights had a slight 9-6 lead after a kill by Kelsey Smith (Vienna, VA / Madison), but the Fighting Muskies hung around. The set was tied at 18-18 when the Knights went on a 7-3 run to close out the set 25-21 and take the match with a 3-0 sweep. 

Gabriella Kellogg finished with 12 kills while Westra had 11 kills on the match. Junior Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, MI / Jenison) finished with 18 digs on the evening while teammates Kehn and Grace Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy) each had 11 digs.

The second match of the day for the Knights was against Cornell College in an afternoon matchup. Calvin started out on a great 11-4 run to start the set that was capped off by Hall with a kill. The Knights dominated the rest of the set, and the Rams couldn't find a way to stop them. Calvin finished off the set on a 14-7 run to take it 25-15 after a kill by Bos. 

Cornell came out ready to go in the second set and jumped out to quick lead over Calvin. The Rams had a 14-7 lead over the Knights, and then Calvin got right back into it. The Knights got within two points with a score of 19-17, but Cornell held them back the rest of the way. Cornell took the second set 25-18 and tied it 1-1. 

Calvin stormed out of the gate in the third set to take a 20-11 lead after a kill by Gabriella Kellogg. The Knights quickly took the third set with a score of 25-15 and were up 2-1 on the match. The fourth set again saw Calvin gaining the early lead with a score of 10-3 on a kill from Westra. Cornell slowly fought back into the set by only trailing by two with a score of 19-17.

The Knights hung on to their lead the remainder of the set and won 24-18 and took the match 3-1. Gabriella Kellogg finished the game with 17 kills with 10 of them coming in the fourth set alone. Westra had 15 kills and 13 digs to as well while teammate Schriemer finished with 16 digs.
