Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team rolled past the visiting Spartans of Manchester University Wednesday night at Zuidema Field by an 8-0 score.
Calvin led 5-0 at halftime, using first half goals from senior Hailey Niles (Syracuse, NY/Onodaga CC), sophomore Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS), freshman Lindsey Houtsma (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS), junior Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./Lakeland Christian Academy) and junior Karley Michmerhuizen (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS).
The goal by Houtsma was the first of her collegiate career.
In the second half, sophomore Elizabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) broke free for goals in the 60th and 63rd minutes to extend the lead to 7-0. Houtsma then finished off the scoring with her second goal of the night, scoring in the in the 85th minute.
Niles, sophomore Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian HS), Mueller and senior Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) were all credited with an assist on the evening.
Senior Sarah Hoekwater (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the first 45 minutes for the Knights, with freshman Emma Swain (Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) going the final 45 minutes to help combine on the clean sheet.
COACHES COMMENT: "Always good to play in front of the home fans and get a win," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Now it's time to get to work and prepare for a difficult road test."
