Box Score 2 Calvin Women's Volleyball went 2-0 this Saturday at the MIAA-NCAC Challenge by defeating Ohio Wesleyan 3-1 and taking down Denison 3-0.
Ohio Wesleyan
(23-25, 28-26, 25-11, 25-19)
In the first match of the day the Knights found themselves in close first set with the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan. Calvin found themselves trailing 16-13 late in the first set. They pulled with one point with the score of 24-23, but Ohio Wesleyan finished things off and took the first set of the match 25-23.
The second set saw the Knights having an 18-11 lead, but the Battling Bishops fought back and tied the set at 22-22. Ohio Wesleyan quickly took a 24-22, but Calvin went on a 6-1 run to take the second set 28-26 after a kill by junior Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hils, IL / Timothy Christian).
The Knights dominated in the third set of the match. They jumped out to a 15-7 lead after a kill by Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) and continued to add to their lead. The Knights ended up taking the third set with a score of 25-11.
In the fourth set, Calvin again jumped to an early 15-8 lead after a nice kill from sophomore Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy). The Knights held on to the lead the reminder of the set and won 25-19 while also winning the match 3-1.
Gabriella Kellogg led the team with 22 kills while Westra finished with 14 and Bos had 12. Junior Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, MI / Jenison) finished the game with 16 digs while Westra had 11 on the match.
Denison
(25-18, 25-22, 25-17)
The second match of the day was against Denison and the first set was another close one to start. The set was tied at 11-11 when the Knights went on a 4-0 run capped off by a kill from Gabriella Kellogg to take a 15-11 lead. Calvin held on to its led the remainder of first set and with a kill from Madelyn Hall (Hudsonville, MI / Hudsonville) claimed the 25-18 win.
Calvin took a slight lead in the start of the second set with a score of 10-9 after a kill by Westra. It was a tight one as the set went on to be tied at 18-18 after a kill by Bos. The Knights gained a slight led over the Big Red and held on to win the set 25-22 and took a 2-0 match lead.
The Knights used their momentum from the second set to grab an early 8-3 lead after a nice kill from Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, MI / Wyoming). Calvin continued to dominate and extended its lead 17-9 with another kill from Westra and were in complete control. Denison had no answer for Calvin's offensive and the Knight go on to win 25-17, and take the match 3-0.
Westra finished the match with 16 kills and 10 digs while Bos finished with 12 kills. Gabriella Kellogg had 11 kills on the match while teammate Wrubel finished with 20 digs.
