Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin battled Aurora to a scoreless draw Friday night at Zuidema Field.
The Knights move to 3-0-2 with the tie heading into a Saturday night match against the Firebirds of Carthage.
Calvin nearly won the game in the final two minutes of overtime as junior Ethan Harvey (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) ripped a shot on the run in the box that clattered off the crossbar, came straight down and was cleared away from goal.
In the opening 20 minutes, Aurora (2-0-1) pushed the attack, firing five shots at goal, forcing Calvin junior goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) to be on form, making a key save in traffic on a shot from the right wing.
Calvin bumped its intensity over the final 25 minutes of the first half, allowing the Knights to settle into the game.
Aurora outshot Calvin 5-3 in the first half but the second half belonged to the Knights as they outshot the Spartans 12-2 over the next 45 minutes. Aurora goalie Jalen Depenbrock was strong for the Spartans in goal, making three second half saves as his defense began to settle into a low block.
In the first 10-minute overtime session, Depenbrock was forced to make three saves including a pair in the opening two minutes.
With 1:18 left in the second overtime, Harvey raced behind the Aurora defense and cranked a shot that hit the bar flush, leaving the large Calvin crowd gasping at the near golden goal.
Ultimately, Calvin settled for a tie - its second of the season. The Knights finished with a 23-8 shots at goal advantage including an 8-1 advantage in the two overtime sessions.
Wunder had two saves for the Knights while Depenbrock collected seven saves in goal for Aurora.
