Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin University women's soccer team started its season off with a win at Zuidema Field over Heidelberg University with a score of 4-0.
The Knights began to put the pressure on in the early minutes as senior Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, MI / Plymouth Christian) had a great cross to the middle where Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, MI / North Muskegon) just missed the header.
Calvin continued to get many opportunities on the offensive end in the first ten minutes of the match. Sophomore Elizabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) had a chance to score off a corner kick, but Meredith Bruce of Heidelberg made a fantastic save.
Calvin finally broke through and Mueller scored the first goal of the game with the assist going to Kaitlyn VanLaare (Brampton, Ont. / Toronto District Christian) giving the Knights a 1-0 lead. Mueller scored her second goal with the assist from Williams to take a 2-0 lead with thirty-two minutes left in the half. The Knights added another goal before half time with Williams scoring her first of the day with the assist going to Hailey Niles (Syracuse, NY / Onondaga CC).
Calvin took a 3-0 lead heading into halftime and outshot Heidelberg 15-0 and was 6-0 on corners in the first half.
The second half of the game, Calvin was in control most of the half and had more chances to add to its lead. Heidelberg came close to scoring but senior Sarah Hoekwater (Hudsonville, MI / Unity Christian) made a nice save to hold Heidelberg scoreless. The Knights gained another goal with about two minutes left in the game on an own goal to make the final score 4-0.
Mueller finished the game with two goals while Williams had one on the night. Calvin outshot Heidelberg 25-4 on the game and 8-1 on corner kicks as well.
COACHES COMMENTS: "I liked our focus as we started the game today and continued to push for our first goal," said Head Coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Always good to get a result the first game of the season. We've got a lot of work ahead of us as we prepare for our match with Aurora on Saturday."
UP NEXT: Calvin will host Aurora College at Zuidema Field at 3 p.m. on Saturday September 4.
