Calvin Women's Soccer Remains on top of MIAA Standings With 3-0 Victory Over Albion

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin stayed on top of the MIAA standings with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Albion Britons Friday night at Zuidema Field.

Calvin (5-0-0 overall, 5-0-0 MIAA) remains three points ahead of Kalamazoo which also remains unbeaten in league play at 4-0-0 in conference action.

Calvin scored pair of first half goals against the run of play and used an insurance goal midway through the second half to pull away for the win.

Defense was a major reason for the Calvin win however as senior Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) came up with seven saves including a pair of sterling stops in each half. Calvin's defense also cleared a shot off the line early in the first half to keep the game scoreless before the Knights broke through for the lead.

Calvin took the lead in the 15th minute on a perfect pull-back pass by freshman Kaitlyn VanLaare (Brampton, Ont./Toronto District Christian HS) that put senior Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS). Paulson made no mistake in burying a shot inside the near post for her second goal of the season.

In the 25th minute, freshman Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) broke free through on goal off a lead pass from freshman Elizabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and whipped a shot past the keeper to give Calvin a 2-0 advantage.

Calvin's final goal came in the 67th minute as sophomore Emma Thompson (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) cleaned up a rebound shot from Mueller and blasted home her first goal of the spring campaign.

Albion held a 13-12 shots at goal advantage. Albion goalkeeper Romee Natschke had six saves in goal for the Britons.

COACHES COMMENT: "Very pleased with the result tonight from our group," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Albion is a very good team and we had our hands full. We are happy to come away with three points. We have a quick turnaround to prepare for Adrian. We look forward to the challenge on Monday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Adrian on Monday for a 7 p.m. match.
