Calvin Men's Soccer Bounced by Britons from MIAA Tournament

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin bowed out of the MIAA Tournament with a 2-1 loss to the visiting Albion Britons Tuesday night at Zuidema Field.

Seeded eighth in the tournament in a post-season coaches' poll, Albion advances to the semifinals to face Trine while top-seeded Calvin closes its spring season at 7-2-0.

Calvin held the edge in shots at goal 22-9 but the Britons capitalized on a pair of Calvin defensive mistakes to take a 2-0 lead.

Albion nearly scored in the fourth minute of the game as Daniel Acosta was sprung free on goal but was denied by Calvin sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Calvin began to generate the majority of the scoring opportunities with senior Shay Smith (Columbus, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) hitting a shot from the top of the box that was saved in the 28th minute and freshman Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) whistling a shot just wide in the 37th minute.

The game took a turn late in the first half as a back pass on the slippery turf led to a Calvin turnover and a subsquent foul inside the penalty box. Albion's Jason Warras made good on the spot kick to give the Britons a 1-0 lead they would carry into halftime.

Six minutes into the second half, another Calvin turnover on a back pass led to an Albion breakaway. Albion's Moses Jatta took the intercepted ball and slide a shot inside the far post to put the Britons up 2-0.

Calvin nearly sliced the deficit in half in the 56th minute as a header by freshman Nick Augustyn (Westmont, Il./Benet Academy) off a corner kick was saved and parried over the bar by Albion goalkeeper Maximillian Loria.

In the 65th minute, it appeared Calvin had made the score 2-1 but a goal by the Knights was disallowed after an off-sides call.

The Knights continued to mount pressure and hit the post and crossbar on a shot by Akintade with just under five minutes to play. The Knights finally broke through with 3:24 remaining as junior Luca Seazzu (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque HS) slid a shot into the right hand corner off a pass from Augustyn. The play began with a turnover by the Albion goalkeeper with Akintade sending a shot past the keeper. The shot was cleared off the line by an Albion defender with the rebound coming to the feet of Augustyn who slipped a pass to Seazzu.

The Knights nearly broke through for the equalizer right off the enusing kickoff but a shot by sophomore Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was blocked. The Britons were able to hold on from there for the victory.

Loria had eight saves for Albion in goal while Wunder had four saves in goal for the Knights.
