Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin women's volleyball captured a 3-0 victory against Albion on Friday evening at Van Noord Arena. The Knights claimed the win by scores of 25-21, 25-15, 25-19.
The first set of the match saw the Knights jumping out to a 14-11 lead after a kill by sophomore Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, IL / Timothy Christian), but the Britons weren't backing down. They managed to take an 18-17 lead later on in the set. Calvin stayed strong as it went on an 8-2 run the rest of the set and won it after another kill by Westra, which gave them a 1-0 lead in sets.
Ranked 14th nationally, Calvin used its momentum from the end of the first set to gain a quick advantage in the second. The Knights jumped out to an 11-4 lead early on in the second after a service ace from Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian).
The Knights continued to add to their lead and with a kill from junior Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, MI / Vicksburg) which put Calvin up 21-14 late in the second. Albion couldn't seem to cut into the deficit and Calvin held them off to take the second set of the night 25-15.
The Britons still had some fight left in them as they were going toe-to-toe with the Knights at the start of the third set. They managed to have a 13-11 lead over Calvin and were gaining momentum. The Knight answered right back with a 7-3 run which was capped off by a kill from Tori Roskamp (Holland, MI / Holland Christian) to give them a 18-16 lead.
Calvin finished the third set on another 7-3 run to seal the 25-19 third set win and the match. The Knights improve to 4-0 on the season and are 3-0 in the MIAA. Westra finished with a game-high 17 kills on the evening while teammate Bos had 9 kills and 4 digs. Sophomore Theresa Kehn (Brighton, MI / Charyl Stockwell Preparatory) had 16 digs in the match while Schriemer had 29 assists.
COACHES COMMENTS: "We played more relaxed and confident tonight," said Head Coach Amber Warners. "Seemed like we had a lot more fun too. I thought we played good defense and had some nice swings too. Happy with the offense tonight!"
UP NEXT: The Knights will head to Trine on Wednesday April 7 with a start time of 7 p.m.
