Box Score ALBION, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team wrapped up 14th consecutive MIAA regular season title with a 2-0 victory at Albion Friday night. Calvin finishes the MIAA regular season 6-0-0, three points ahead of 5-1-0 Kalamazoo.
Senior Shay Smith (Columbus, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) scored both goals, whipping in a free kick from 25 yards out in the 11th minute of play.
Calvin carried the lead into halftime as the Knights held a slim 6-5 shots at goal advantage.
Smith scored the clinching goal in the 78th minute, receiving a quick pass from sophomore Jon Szydlowski (Twinsburg, Oh./Twinsburg HS) and lofting a chip that found the upper 90 just inside the far post. The goal was Smith's team-leading fifth of the spring.
Sophomore Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was stout in goal, making three saves in recording his fifth shutout of the spring including the 10th of his career.
Calvin finished with an 11-6 shots at goal advantage including 5-1 in the second half.
COACHES COMMENT: "I'm really proud of our group to get a huge win tonight," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Albion made it difficult but we found a way. Daniel (Wunder) and our back four (defenders) were fantastic and two fantastic goals by Shay tonight. We'll enjoy it for sure, and then look ahead to next week's league tournament."
NEXT UP: Calvin will now await official seeding for next week's MIAA Tournament which will be announced later this weekend. First round games begin on Tuesday with semifinals set for Thursday and the championship final set for Saturday, March 24.
