Calvin Women's Volleyball Beats Bulldogs To Remain Unbeaten

Box Score

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Knights of Calvin hosted the Bulldogs of Adrian in a conference volleyball match Wednesday night. The Knights were able to stay undefeated on the year, defeating Adrian in straight sets. The Knights moved to 7-0 and 6-0 in the conference, while the Bulldogs dropped to 5-10 and 2-4.

Calvin started hot, establishing the momentum that would last throughout the match. A ten-point run highlighted by two Teresa Kehn aces in a row propelled the Knights early. Fellow sophomore Heidi Westra got it going early for Calvin as well, racking up seven kills in the first frame. Calvin went on to win the set 25-10.

The second and third sets featured more of the same for the Knights. Calvin was paced by Gabriella Kellogg's five kills in the second frame, while Maria Bos took the torch in the third with four in the final frame. Adrian took a timeout in each set, although Calvin's momentum could not be subdued. Calvin won the second set 25-16, and the third set 25-12.

Kehn led the way from the service line in the match with four aces and only one error while also facilitating several Calvin runs. Anna Schriemer chipped in three aces and Aubrey Wrubel two, with each player serving aggressively all night.

Bos led the Knights with 13 kills. Westra trailed right behind with 12, and Kellogg as well with 10. Wrubel led defensively with 12 digs, while Schriemer racked up 41 assists.

The victory sets up a regular season conference championship with rival Hope this Friday. That game will be played at 6:30 PM at the Van Noord Arena. Hope defeated Olivet in straight sets on Wednesday night to move to 6-0 on the season and in conference. While Calvin was able to win the season series last year 3-1 over the Flying Dutch, each team has a shot to gain the upper hand in this first matchup of the 2020-2021 season.

COACHES COMMENT: "We played well all-around," said Calvin head women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "Our offense did a really nice job of terminating which was a credit to our good defense and back row play. We will keep working hard to improve."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host rival Hope Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
