The goal was the third of the year for Williams who leads Calvin in scoring with 10 points (3 goals, 4 assists).

Calvin nearly doubled its lead in the 28th minute when sophomore Emma Thompson (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) broke free on goal through the right side of the box but was denied on a smart save by Wolfe.

Kalamazoo put pressure on Calvin goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) was up to the task, making four saves in each half.

Hunting an equalizer with the wind at its back, Kalamazoo pinned the ball inside Calvin's end inside the final five minutes but the Knights were able to clear the ball out of harm's way repeatedly to help seal the win.

The game finished with each side firing 13 shots at goal. Wolfe had seven saves in defeat for Kalamazoo.

Kliewer picked up her 23rd collegiate shutout including her fifth of the year. In six conference games, Calvin outscored its opponents 13-1 with four of its six victories coming as one-goal wins.

The Knights now await MIAA Tournament pairings which will be announced later this weekend.

COACHES COMMENT: "I am excited for our women, " said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "We found a way to pull out a win tonight. What a strike from Liz (Elizabeth) Williams to put us on the board early. Kalamazoo put us on our heels and created a lot of dangerous chances. A credit to them on a well-played match. We look forward to preparing for next week's conference tournament. We know we'll have to bring a stronger performance to put ourselves in a position to advance."
