Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin men's basketball season came to close on Thursday night as the Knights fell to undefeated Trine in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals by a score of 83-69.
The Thunder proved why they were the number-one seed as they jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Knights tried to fight back into it and after a made layup by senior Sam LaDuke (Ludington, MI / Ludington), they cut the deficit down to ten by trailing 20-10.
Trine kept up the scoring up as it went on a 9-5 run to take a 29-15 lead with 7:25 left in the half. Calvin could not get the lead down to single digits before halftime and found itself trailing 37-26.
The Knights were led in scoring at half by freshman Luke Scheffers (St. Charles, IL / St. Charles North) with 8 points and senior Thad Shymanski (Ada, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) who had 5 points. They struggled on the offensive end by shooting 9-25 (36%) from the field and 3-10 (30%) from the three-point line. The Thunder outrebounded the Knights by 19-16.
Trine held a steady double-digit lead over Calvin in the second half until Calvin's bench came up huge. The Knights made three straight three-pointers with Connor Kok (Dorr, MI / South Christian) making one and Nate Minderhoud Grand Rapids, MI / Covenant Christian) making two to cut the lead to 50-44. The Thunder responded with a 13-3 run to take a 63-47 lead with 9:13 left in the game. Calvin tried to get back into the game, but the Trine kept the pressure on the Knights and pulled away for the win.
Calvin was led in scoring by Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Nate Minderhoud finished with 11 points as well. The Knights shot 24-50 (48%) from the field and 9-21 (42.9%) from the three-point line. They outrebounded Trine 31-29 and finished with 14 assists.
These four Knights close out their 2021 season: Emmettt Warners, Thad Shymanski, Sam LaDuke and Caleb Cleary (Middleville, MI / South Christian).
