Box Score The Calvin men's soccer team downed Adrian at Zuidema Field on a windy evening with a score of 8-0 to improve to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the MIAA.
The game started with Knights having a lot of early possession with coming close to scoring multiple times. Calvin was able to break through the Adrian defense in the first six minutes of the game. Senior Sam Twigg (Auckland, NZ) put the ball in the upper right corner just outside the eighteen-yard line to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Calvin continued to keep the pressure on Adrian as it had plenty of chances to put another one in the back of the next. Freshman Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, IL / Lake Forest HS) had a great chance as he got through the defense on a breakaway, but Adrian's keeper made the save.
The Knights controlled possession most of the half and just before halftime they were able to extend their lead. Akintade hit a strike in the upper left corner after a slip pass from Twigg to put them up 2-0 before halftime. Calvin outshot Adrian 16-1 in the first half of play.
In the second half, the Knights started the scoring quickly as Mason Smith (Flint, MI / Flint Powers Catholic) found Chris Schua (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) on the outside and put ball in the lower opposite corner. This extended the lead to 3-0 with forty minutes left in the second half. The Bulldogs struggled to break through the defense of the Knights led by Senior Drew Van Andel (Grand Haven, MI / Grand Haven) and Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, LA / The Dunham School).
In the second half, the Knights put on a scoring frenzy as they scored three goals in eight minutes of play. Akintade scored two goals to get himself a hat trick in just his fourth collegiate game. Smith had the third goal with Twigg assisting on two of the three goals for the Knights. Calvin continued to pile on the goals as Jack Kilgallon (Plandfield, IL / Wheaton Academy) and Zach Flowerday (Holland, MI / Holland Christian) each added to the total which gave them an 8-0 lead.
Calvin improves to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the MIAA. The Knights also outshot the Bulldogs 28-3 on the evening with 15 shot on goal.
