Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin's women volleyball team defeated Alma 3-1 in four sets at Van Noord Arena on Friday night. Calvin won the match by scores of 25-13, 19-25, 25-21, 25-12.
Calvin improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Knights found themselves trailing 4-2 early in the first set. Calvin responded with a 9-3 run capped off by a great service ace by Theresa Kehn (Brighton, MI / Charyl Stockwell Preparatory) to give itself an 11-7 lead. Calvin continued to dominate the first set and got within one point of taking the set after a big block by Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy). Calvin went on a 14-6 run and took the first set 25-13.
The Scots came into the second set with a lot of energy and grabbed the 11-9 lead over the Knights early. Calvin tried to cut into the deficit, but Alma seemed to have answer for everything Calvin threw its way. The Scots maintained a steady lead throughout the whole second set and won 25-19 tying it at 1-1 for the match.
In the third set, Calvin took charge right away opening on a 7-3 run after a kill by junior Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, MI / Vicksburg). Alma wasn't backing down in the contest as it responded with a 5-1 run to tie it at 8-8.
The Knights started to gain traction as they pulled away from the Scots and found themselves leading 17-15 after a kill from junior Madelyn Hall (Hudsonville, MI / Hudsonville). The Knights built on their lead and won the third set 25-21 after a kill by Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, IL / Timothy Christian) to give Calvin a 2-1 sets advantage.
The fourth set had Calvin taking care of business as it jumped out to a 15-5 lead after a service ace by Grace Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy). The Scots didn't get close the rest of the fourth set as the Knights won 25-12 and won the match 3-1.
Westra finished with 16 kills and 10 digs on the night while teammate Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) had 11 kills and 11 digs. Also, Gabriella Kellogg finished with 11 kills, and Schriemer had 32 assists and 12 digs on the match. The Knights finished with 42 assists, 47 kills and 49 digs
COACHES COMMENTS: "I'm really happy with the result and I think we have some things to work on and work through which is really good after a win," said Head Coach Amber Warners. "We will regroup and keeping working hard after today's win. I'm happy with their effort and intensity they showed. We played pretty good defense and played well on offense tonight."
UP NEXT: The Knights will travel to Alma on Wednesday March 31 with a start time of 7 p.m. The match will be a non-conference contest.
