Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. - Calvin remained unbeaten on the young season with a 2-1 overtime victory at rival Hope Friday night at Hope's Van Andel Stadium.
Freshman Elizabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to collect a pass in the box, turn on a defender and then chip a shot just inside the far post with 6:13 left in the first overtime.
The goal was the first of Williams' collegiate career.
Hope outshot Calvin 14-11 and pressed the play early in the first half. The Knights were able to absorb the pressure and began to counter attack. The Knights (3-0-0 overall and MIAA) then broke the scoreless drought in the 28th minute as senior Maria VanderLei (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) intercepted a Hope pass near midfield and sent freshman Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) in on goal through the left channel. Mueller took two touches and skipped a shot to the far post that beat the keeper and settled into the back of the net. The goal was the second of the week for Mueller who also scored in Calvin's 1-0 victory over Alma earlier this week.
Hope equalized in the 59th minute as the Flying Dutch bore in on goal and sent a shot that Calvin senior Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) saved. Hope's Natalie Hammer was able to pounce on the rebound however and whipped in a shot to tie the game 1-1.
Calvin began to carry the play in the final minutes of regulation and kept the offensive pressure on in overtime. The pressure paid off when the Knights made a run through the right wing and sent the ball into Williams who did the rest.
Kliewer finished the match with six saves in posting her 30th collegiate victory in goal.
COACHES COMMENT: "We are really excited to get a result on the road tonight," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff who is now 1-0-2 in her coaching career against the Flying Dutch. "There is nothing like a rivalry game. Hope is a very good team who put a ton of pressure on us, especially early in both halves. I am happy with the way that our group competed and found a way to put the ball in the back of the net. We look forward to a week off to regroup and get ready for the second part of MIAA play with more challenges ahead."
NEXT UP: Calvin returns to action on April 6 when it hosts Trine University at 7 p.m.
