GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin picked up its second win in as many outings, defeating Alma 1-0 Tuesday night at Zuidema Field.

Freshman Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) whipped in a dart from the top of the box in the 79th minute of play for the game's only goal.

The match was full of scoring opportunities for both teams, leaving the small crowd of spectators entertained.

Calvin outshot Alma (0-2-0) 12-5 in the first half with Alma's Ally Wentworth collecting six saves. Calvin senior goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) was also up to the task, making two first half saves including a diving stop on a shot in the box by Makenzie Rajewski in the 44th minute on a play that began off a corner kick.

Calvin upped its possession of the ball and began to press the attack as the second half wore on. Mueller whizzed a pair of shots at goal, one which was saved by Wentworth in the 71st minute with the second sailing just over the bar in the 75th minute. With 11:15 left in regulation, Mueller made no mistake whirling from the top of the box and whipping a low hard shot that beat Wentworth to the far post and settled into the back of the net. The goal was the first of Mueller's collegiate career.

Alma pressed for the equalizer in the final five minutes of play, skipping a shot off the top of the crossbar in the 87th minute and then sending shot just wide of the far post in the closing seconds.

Calvin finished the game with a 23-10 shots at goal advantage. Kliewer had four saves in goal for Calvin while Wentworth had 10 saves for Alma.

COACHES COMMENT: "Alma is a really good team," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "I thought we had some good moments, especially in the first half but we struggled to put the ball away again. To the credit of our team, they remained mentally tough even when Alma started getting some chances and they found a way to get it done in the end. We know that winning is tough in our league. Now we move on to another tough matchup on Friday night."
