ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin opened its 2021 spring campaign against league competition with a 3-1 victory at Adrian Monday evening at Docking Stadium.

Calvin surprised the Bulldogs with a goal just 18 seconds into the match by junior Sam Twigg (Auckland, New Zealand). After playing the ball out of the back seconds after the opening kickoff, the ball landed in the Adrian defensive third. An Adrian defender was unable to clear the ball allowing Twigg to dart in and head the ball over the Adrian keeper and into the back of the net.

Adrian struck back 20 minutes later however as a Calvin defensive miscue led to a Bulldog free kick just outside the Calvin box. Adrian's Robbie Precious sent the free kick into the back of the net to knot the score 1-1.

The match remained level until the 53rd minute when sophomore Jack Kilgallon (Plainfield, Il./Wheaton Academy) got free on a pass from freshman Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) and slipped a shot into the net for his first goal as a Calvin Knight.

Seven minutes later, Twigg got loose and buried his second goal of the game to put the Knights up 3-1.

Calvin (1-1-0 overall) kept the Bulldogs (0-4-0 overall) off the scoreboard the rest of the way to seal the win.

Calvin held a 19-3 shots at goal advantage. Sophomore Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had one save in goal and picked up the victory for the Knights. Alex Brock had five saves in goal for Adrian.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was good to get a result on the road," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Credit Adrian in that they made things difficult for us for a healthy portion of the night. We'll take the points and look forward to facing Trine on Thursday."
