HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming and diving team rolled to a 170-125 dual meet victory over rival Hope Saturday afternoon at the Holland Aquatics Center. The Knights are now 4-1 in dual meet action this season.
Calvin took first place in nine events and used strong depth throughout the meet to post the comfortable win.
Swimming near his hometown, sophomore Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had a big day, winning the 200 freestyle (1:43.90) and 100 freestyle (46.67). Calvin took the top three spots in the 200 freestyle and the top five spots in the 100 freestyle.
Senior Colin Murphy (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice HS) took home a win in the 100 backstroke (52.98). Senior Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./The Covenant School) won the 50 freestyle (20.82) as Calvin took the top four spots in the race.
Senior Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman School) took first place in the 100 breaststroke (59.13).
In the one-meter diving competition, the Bergsma brothers went 1-2 with freshman Jordan Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking first (270.90 points) and senior Alex Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing second (245.90 points).
Other individual winners included sophomore William Toomey (Runnells, Ia./Southeast Polk HS) in the 200 backstroke (1:57.71), junior Bryce Miner (Sunnyvale, Ca./Homestead HS) in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.30) and sophomore Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 100 butterfly (50.43).
In addition, Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Holstege, Iturbe, Camy and senior Sam Norman (Fulton, Il./Fulton HS) took first place with a time of 1:31.63.
Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Albion and Olivet at the Venema Aquatic Center.
