Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. – Calvin fell on day two of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Tournament, dropping an 87-72 decision to East Beltline neighbor Cornerstone Saturday evening on the campus of Hope College.
One night after torching the nets with 48.1 percent shooting from three-point range in a win against Aquinas, Calvin (4-2) was stymied from beyond the long line against Cornerstone as the Knights hit just 3 of 18 (16.7 percent) against the Golden Eagles.
Calvin held a 16-11 lead midway through the first half against Cornerstone (9-3) but the Golden Eagles closed the first half on a 30-12 scoring run to lead 41-28 at halftime.
Calvin chipped into the Cornerstone lead throughout the second half, getting the deficit down to six points at 55-49 with 11:31 left to play.
Cornerstone bumped its lead back up to double-digits at 61-49 moments later however and the closest Calvin could get the rest of the way was seven points.
Senior Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) led Calvin in scoring with 17 points while seniors Luke Morrison (Bristol, Ind./Northridge HS) and Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 14 points apiece. Sophomore Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Il./Huntley HS) had 12 points.
Cornerstone held a 39-28 rebounding advantage. Senior Jordan Katje (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) was Calvin's top man on the boards with eight rebounds.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Shymanski was named to the all-tournament team.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Elmhurst University at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
